Regional Shares of the Half-Trillion Dollar Photonics Industry
Last month's newsletter announced that the optics and photonics industry reached an estimated $480 billion in 2014, according to OSA Industry Development Associates, using preliminary estimates for 2014 production. That is 6% growth over 2013, and a record high.

The figure below shows the source of the production by country or region. Asia leads, with nearly 2/3 of all production coming from Asian companies, followed by North America and Europe. Asia is particularly concentrated in manufacturers of displays, solar cells and panels, LEDs, and image sensors for consumer and business end-use products. North America and Europe are concentrated in manufacturers of precision products for industrial, scientific, and military applications.

By country, Japan leads production, followed by the U.S., South Korea, Taiwan, and China, although the shares are not greatly different. Germany has the strongest share within Europe.

The values represent the production by the location of the company headquarters, which is not necessarily the location of the manufacturing itself. Many North American and European companies conduct manufacturing operations in their Asian factories or through Asian contractors. However, the value added through the assembly process varies from product to product and is not necessarily significant compared to the selling price. Only the company's income statement captures the full value, including R&D, marketing, and profit.

Swapping Data Centers Like Swapping Laptops--How Long Can That Last?
One of the topics of conversation at OFC 2015 this year was Facebook's claim that the optics in a data center don't have to last more than 5 years because they plan to swap out the hardware every 3 to 5 years anyway. Imagine swapping out all your data centers the way your company swaps out your laptop every 3 years. It's costly: the hardware may be as much as $500 million per data center. And think of the time it takes. There can be hundreds of thousands of processors per data center. Once you swap the last board, it's time to start all over again, like painting the Golden Gate bridge.

This approach is the opposite of the Telcordia-minded telecom sector, which designs equipment to last decades. Without the demands of Telcordia-grade requirements, suppliers can reduce the manufacturing costs--and the prices--of components.

Facebook would keep some hardware in place. Single-mode fiber would be forward-compatible and could stay, along with the rack frames and power supplies. If they can "disaggregate" the components from server boards, Facebook could pool the components onto common boards and use the stranded capacity more efficiently. They could also swap the pooled boards that need upgrading, rather than swapping entire boards just to upgrade a few of the chips on the board.

Needless to say, this planned obsolescence of hardware is good for sales of optical components. It continues as long as swapping out data centers doesn't exceed a reasonable and profitable capex budget: Facebook is currently spending about 13% of revenues on capex.

The day will come when Facebook and its rivals will slow down this pace of upgrades. It may be triggered by a recession and slowing ad revenue, changing user habits, rising equipment costs, a new business model, or all of the above. A slower upgrade cycle could mean fewer new sales of components, unless it is offset by overlapping capex investment habits worldwide.

Welcome New Industry Development Associates Members Top

Showing and Telling Congress the Importance of Photonics
OSA and its National Photonics Initiative (NPI) partners advocated for the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI), reauthorizing the America COMPETES Act, and funding research and development (R&D) during this year's Congressional Visits Day, March 17 and 18. From the photonics industry there were more than 30 participants from industry, academia, and students who visited over 50 congressional offices.

One of the best ways to educate members of Congress on the importance of optics and photonics is to show them. Inviting them to your facility will let them see firsthand what you are doing in optics and photonics in their district, helping them to understand the importance of optics and photonics when the time comes for them to vote on legislation impacting the field.

Now is the perfect time to extend invitations to your members of Congress to visit your facility. During the weeks when the House and Senate are not in session, members of Congress will be working in their home districts and are always looking for visits to do in the community. The OSA public policy team will walk you through the process, help you set up the appointment with the Congressional office, and will provide you with all the information you need to have a successful visit.

Even if you have done the tours before and do not need assistance, please let Brandy know if you are arranging a tour so that the public policy team knows which members of Congress have already toured facilities.
