Nabeel A. Riza, M.S., Ph.D., Caltech, holds the Chair Professorship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. Over a period of 30 years, he has made pioneering innovations in applied optics with several of his inventions deployed worldwide. Riza’s inventions include the CAOS camera, the camceiver, on-chip embedded controls liquid crystal lens, MOST: Multiplexed Optical Scanner Technology, self-aligning acousto-optic interferometry & RF signal processors, low noise liquid crystal switches and all-digital attenuators, photonically controlled ultrasonic imaging probe, fault-tolerant digital MEMS fiber-optic signal controls, agile indoor optical wireless, Electronic (E) lens-based vision testing, microscopy, and 3-D imaging, self-imaging freespace-fiber-optic coupling model, analog-digital fiber-optic RF phased array antenna imaging, agile pixel MEMS imager and E-lens laser beam propagation analyzer, and interferometry-pyrometry Silicon Carbide extreme thermometry.

Riza has served as the Head (Dean) School of Engineering at UCC. His awards include the 2019 Edwin H. Land Medal from OSA, the 2001 ICO Prize & Carl Zeiss E. Abbe Medal, the 2018 IET Achievement Medal, the 2009 IEEE Photonics Society Distinguished Lecturer Award, the 2008 Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis Finalist Distinction Award, the 1994 GE Gold Patent Medal, and the 2009 Ireland Walton Award; is a Fellow of OSA, IEEE, IET, European Optical Society, SPIE, US National Academy of Inventors (NAI); and Honorary Fellow Award of Engineers Ireland Society. Riza holds 48 U.S. patents, 30 as single inventor. He has published 353 international journal and conference papers and has authored the textbook, Photonic Signals and Systems: An Introduction, McGraw Hill, 2013. He is member of the Royal Irish Academy Engineering Committee and a 2020 Inductee of the Royal Irish Academy.
